WRIT 101
First Year Writing
3 Credits Weekly (3-0-0)
This course introduces students to the genres of writing required in university and beyond. Through a series of writing assignments, the course will help students develop a theory of writing that they can use in a variety of contexts. Students will write in several genres and learn strategies for effective research and revision. NOTE: WRIT 101 is intended for students in diploma programs. Students cannot receive credit for both WRIT 101 and ENGL 102.
WRIT 250
Practice and Pedagogy of Tutoring Writing
3 Credits
WRIT 250 introduces students to tutoring writing. Students will study writing centre pedagogy and best practices in peer-to-peer tutoring. Their learning will also be informed by scholarship from writing studies—especially the subfields of English for Academic Purposes, Rhetorical Genre Theory, and Writing in the Disciplines—and critical information literacy. The course includes theoretical and applied learning, featuring both (1) classroom seminar time and (2) observation and practice of tutoring in the MacEwan Library Writing Centre. Successful completion of this course makes students eligible to apply for a paid Peer Writing Tutor position at the Writing Centre.
Prerequisites: A minimum grade of C- in ENGL 102 or WRIT 101.
