French Minor

Whether learning French for the first time or building on existing skills and knowledge, studying French helps students engage with an increasingly culturally and economically interconnected world. Knowledge of an additional language improves critical thinking skills and broadens one's appreciation of the world and its people. A French minor is invaluable to anyone heading into a graduate school program with a second-language requirement or seeking work in the federal public service.

The French Minor is available to students in eligible degree programs. All students in the minor must complete the necessary preparation to enrol in 200-level FREN classes. This may require completing prerequisite courses FREN 111 and FREN 112. In addition, students in the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science must complete 18 credits at the senior-level, including a minimum of 6 credits at the 300-level. Students in other degree programs may use FREN 112 in place of one 300-level FREN course and, therefore, must complete 15 credits in senior-level French courses, including at least 3 credits at the 300-level.

Students must register in a level that is appropriate to their ability. Please refer to the French Placement information on the Humanities Department website.
