Gerontology

Overview

School of Continuing Education
MacEwan.ca/Gerontology

Older patients often require complex and specialized care to maintain physical and mental health. With new advances in all areas of health care, nurses specializing in gerontology offer their patients increased mobility, improved resilience and greater peace of mind.

Career Potential

Graduates specializing in gerontological nursing work in general nursing practice and often take on leadership roles in continuing care, acute care, community nursing, home care, health promotion and primary care. Market trends indicate that independent practice in the area of self-care for older persons (with an emphasis on teaching preventive strategies) will become a central role for the gerontological nurse in the near future.
