If a student has attended another post-secondary institution, the successfully completed courses may be considered for credit towards a credential at MacEwan University.

Upon application to MacEwan University, students should submit official transcripts as soon as available. It is strongly recommended that students submit transcripts by June 15 for Fall enrolment and by October 15 for Winter enrolment. The official transcripts should include final grades and any credentials awarded.

Transfer decisions for Alberta Transfer System member institutions in the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan are available for information and reference on the Learner Pathways website at transferalberta.ca. The Learner Pathways website is operated by the Alberta Council Admissions and Transfer (ACAT). Private institutions must be listed as an approved private provider by ACAT (see www.acat.alberta.ca) to be eligible for articulation decisions and transfer credit awards. Articulated course decisions listed on the Learner Pathways website will be used to award transfer credit by the University. 

Transfer credit is awarded to MacEwan University as an institution and not to specific programs. Transfer credit awards, used to fulfill program requirements, are subject to the requirements and regulations of the admitting program and may vary from the total credit awarded by transfer to MacEwan University. Transfer credit is subject to:

1. Academic residency requirements and program-specific exemptions (Graduation Procedure)
2. MacEwan University's Inter-Institutional Transferability policy

Transfer credit evaluations are completed after an offer of conditional or full admission is made to a university program. It is the student’s responsibility to review the transfer credit granted and bring any discrepancies to the attention of the Transfer Unit (transferunit@macewan.ca) in the Office of the University Registrar. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with an academic advisor in their program of study to understand how transfer credit awards are applied to fulfill the program requirements.

Domestic and international students who have completed post-secondary/higher education outside of Canada should refer to the subsection, International Transfer Credit Evaluation, included in the “International Student” section of this Academic Calendar.

Articulation Requests

When previously completed courses are not included on the Learner Pathways website or are from institutions outside of Alberta, students may request to have their course(s) articulated to MacEwan. Students must use the Articulation Request System (ARS) to initiate the articulation process. ARS is accessed by using the Evaluate My Transfer Credit link under the Admissions & Transfer tile in myStudentSystem.

A term-specific course outline (or syllabus) is required for each course to be articulated. Upon upload to ARS, the articulation request and supporting documents are reviewed by MacEwan University discipline evaluators for an articulation recommendation. The articulation recommendation is added to the MacEwan University Transfer Credit database and the appropriate award is made to the student record. It is imperative for students to submit any articulation requests in a timely manner and to ensure that their official final transcripts have been received by MacEwan. Visiting Students

Outbound (MacEwan University Students Studying at Another Post-secondary Institution)

Students enrolled in a program at MacEwan University who wish to take a course(s) offered by another post-secondary institution must obtain approval from their program. The approval process is subject to their Faculty/School regulations and, if granted, students are issued a Letter of Permission (LOP) by the Office of the University Registrar.

The Letter of Permission authorizes a student to take courses at another post-secondary institution as a visiting student. The letter includes:

• The name of the ‘host’ institution
• The term in which the student may register at the 'host' institution
• The student's current academic standing
• The 'host' institution's course and the MacEwan course for which credit will be granted upon successful completion

Upon completion of the course(s), it is the student's responsibility to ensure that an official transcript from the host institution is submitted by them directly to the Office of the University Registrar for the transfer credit to be recorded on the student's permanent record. Students are encouraged to use the www.myCreds.ca system whenever possible.

If an LOP course is needed to meet a prerequisite for an upcoming term, the FINAL and OFFICIAL transcript must be submitted by the following dates:

• August 15 for Fall Term courses
• December 15 for Winter Term courses
• April 15 for Spring/Summer Term courses

To meet the document deadline for Convocation, the FINAL and OFFICAL transcript must be submitted by the following dates:

• May 1 for Spring Convocation (June of each year)
• October 1 for Fall Convocation (November of each year)

Students who wish to participate in a Study Abroad opportunity should contact MacEwan International regarding the process.

Inbound (Other Post-secondary Students Studying at MacEwan University)

Students enrolled at another post-secondary institution who wish to study at MacEwan University should complete the following steps:

1. Apply to MacEwan University as an Open Studies student.
2. Submit a Letter of Permission from the home institution authorizing the student to attend MacEwan University to the Office of the University Registrar. The LOP must include the specific courses the student has been granted permission to register in and the student’s current academic standing.
3. If the MacEwan course has a prerequisite, it is the student's responsibility to ensure that an official transcript is on file with MacEwan University as proof of meeting the prerequisite requirement prior to registration.
4. Only students deemed to be in good academic standing are eligible to enrol.
